Our Trip to the Quarry...

Posted by HsKubes at 7:28:00 PM 12 thoughts shared
I mentioned in my previous post
that our homeschool group took a trip
to our local quarry on Friday.
We had no idea that it would be so interesting.
We had a lovely time!

Below are some photos of our trip...

Watching rock being dumped

Watching the quarry "dinosaurs" at work
(the workers refer to the machinery as their dinosaurs)

Watching how it all works...

One of the products from the quarry

Photo with one of the quarry "dinosaurs"

A mom of many hats...

A quarry worker of many... bonnets??

Time to go to the pit...

Looking a bit concerned as we drove down...

"Dinosaurs" working in the pit...

Beautiful layers...

The pit was a total of 60 feet below the surface.

Photo with a "dinosaur"...

It was VERY bright out (hence, the squinty eyes).
Notice the size of the tire?
The children were amazed it was bigger than them

(and bigger than Mama).

At the end, we were able to dig for fossils!
First the children got a mini-lesson

on the appearance of fossils
so they would know what to look for...

They had such fun searching, exploring, digging,
and asking if they had, indeed, found fossils...

(Ally decided to enjoy the air conditioning in the van,
since it was terribly hot)

Carolynne asking if she had found one and what it was

They found quite a few fossils like sting ray palettes,
shark teeth, a vertebrate, squid beak, horse teeth, etc...
It was quite fascinating.

And mama even got a little something special, too...

Popping In, Again, to Share More...

Posted by HsKubes at 7:13:00 PM 9 thoughts shared
I'm not sure that posting twice in two days
is really considered "popping in"
but I did want to share a few more photos
so they didn't get too piled up. ;o)

My beloved has been on vacation this week.
He is spending the week with his brothers.
Every year, they have an annual golf week
and this is the week for it.
They spend all day, every day, golfing
and other miscellaneous things,
then spend the evenings together, too.
And that is one of the reasons why
I have a little "extra" time to post, again. ;o)
Not much time to write still
but I still wanted to share more photos.

Here we are continuing our 7th week
of using Student of the Word...

It has been such a blessing digging deeply into God's Word!
It is something the children and I, alike, are enjoying.

On Tuesday, we headed to piano lessons (Ally teaches)
and saw families of geese at the cemetery.
We pulled aside to watch them...

They were so cute to watch and follow.

Later, we visited friends so the younger ones
could go on a nature scavenger hunt.
They had such fun...

While there, Ally and her friend giggled with guinea pigs...

The mamas sat together, fellowshipping,
and discussing a few
new books that we are
anticipating arriving in the mail. ;o)
(I love mail!! I love books!!! I love the two together! lol)

On Thursday, Will spent the afternoon golfing
with Daddy and his uncles. He was thrilled!

He took this shot of Daddy as they rode in the golf cart...

(That's my honey! ;o)

Later that evening,

Daddy and "the uncles" stayed for supper.
The children enjoyed having all of them there...

the Rub*ick's Cube competition

playing a game

playing around

reading aloud

Here are Daddy, Will, and "the uncles"...

They had a wonderful time together.

Today we went on our homeschool field trip,
to our local quarry, and I hope to share photos soon. ;o)

I hope that y'all have enjoyed your week, too!

and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:"

Popping In to Say Hello and Share...

Posted by HsKubes at 5:08:00 PM 6 thoughts shared
I had a little time to spend here
so I wanted to pop in and say, "Hello".
Thank you for the kind comments,
prayers, and encouragement
as I have been taking a little break from blogging.

After speaking on the phone with my mama,
I was compelled to share some photos of our past week. ;o)
I would love to write more, but I cannot, due to time.
I'd love to share all that the Lord is teaching me
and doing in our family but I'd end up writing a book!
(praise Him!)
It is a blessing to see the Lord answer prayer,
to work in hearts, and to accomplish His good.
What a blessing trials are, too, though they can be hard.
I am always thankful that the Lord does not
just leave us where we are, spiritually.
I sure praise Him for His Faithfulness!

It's been a good week for us.
We've been continuing with our Bible studying,
implementing our new "blessing our home chart",
working on creating good habits,
spending precious time together,
tending to our children's hearts and my own,
enjoying God's house, people, and creation,
spending time with friends,
going to our homeschool park day,
learning at home, doing our annual testing,
going to dentist appointments,
enjoying the beautiful weather, sewing,
enjoying visits with Daddy's brothers,
and much more!

Well, without further ado,
here are some photos from our past week...

Having fun while doing schoolwork with friends...

Enjoying our homeschool park day, last Friday...

The new instrument that Ally is learning...

The lil' girls organizing their papers (for fun!)
on a Saturday afternoon...

Ally trying to feed her feathery friends...

Ally and Will watching the birds (and the squirrel)
together from the window...

Beth learning to read...

An exciting golf cart ride after piano lessons...

I was hoping to share more

but my beloved has our camera
(which contains my other photos).
He and Will are having a golf day
with Daddy's brothers today.
I hope to share more photos soon.

Even though I may still not be able to
respond to comments or emails,
I do hope to post photos when I am able. ;o)
Thank you all for understanding.
I will try to respond and visit y'all
as I am able, when I have time. ;o)

In the meantime, I look forward to spending
more time with my family.
The moments are flying by too swiftly
and this is such a crucial time
to be tending to their hearts.
Praise God for this precious time
and praise Him for these precious children.

"Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD:
and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man;
so are children of the youth."

grown up in their youth;
that our daughters may be as corner stones,
polished after the similitude of a palace"
~ Psalm 144:12

for he that cometh to God must believe that he is,
and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."

Prayerfully, Pleasantly, and Purposely Prioritizing...

Posted by HsKubes at 8:14:00 PM 17 thoughts shared

As life seems to continue in its whirlwind,
I often need to prayerfully re-examine
my heart, our family, our home
and be sure I am tending to our precious sheep
and other responsibilities as I ought to be. ;o)

Though my heart desires to thoughtfully respond
to every comment/email that I have received,
I will be unable to, at this time.
I will be taking a bit of a break
in blogging/commenting/emailing
so that I may focus on heart and home matters. ;o)

I hope to not stay away long
but I do look forward to focusing this additional time
on my husband, our children, and our home.

If you find yourself here and decide to visit a while,
you are most welcome to grab your favorite drink,
stay for a spell and visit some of our previous posts,
listed in our sidebar.

Thank you for understanding. ;o)
I pray y'all enjoy your days
and may Christ have the preeminence.

The Rest of Our Week... in Pictures...

Posted by HsKubes at 11:38:00 PM 22 thoughts shared
Wow! Things seem to be so busy around here lately.
We have been continuing with our new
household blessing assignments,
keeping up with our Bible study, along with our academics,
and other things pertaining to life. ;o)

My day is about to come to an end
but before the weekend started
and too many photos accumulated,
I wanted to share some photos from this week...

Carolynne and Beth spent much time coloring

Will, after learning about classification,
enjoyed looking at the scientific names
of birds from our field guide.

Ally delighted in filling our home with music.

We spent some time with friends,
where the children got to play, explore, and run...

Ally and her friend spent lots of time singing together,
attempting to make their own cassette/cd... just for fun...

Here they were recalling the words to a song. ;o)

Another day with friends...
the children enjoyed swinging...

Beth and Carolynne are learning to read.
Here was Beth reading aloud to her big sis...

The rest of our photos are from today.
It was beautiful and we were able to go to the ocean...
resulting in some sun-kissed faces...
to which, my beloved is calling me his "lawn spur"...
In our home, that's "toddler" for lobster...
I'm a bit burnt but it was worth the wonderful day in the sun...

Arrival at the beach

Fun in the water...

Fun in the sand...

The children enjoyed watching these, while there...

They had never seen anyone surf before,
so they were entertained. ;o)

This little fellow was interesting to watch
as he sought food with his head in the ground!

We, also, saw a pod of dolphins
but I didn't get a good picture of them.

It was a blessing to enjoy God's beautiful creation!

and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth."

Monday's Musings...

Posted by HsKubes at 7:41:00 AM 11 thoughts shared
I hope that y'all had a good weekend
and a good beginning of the week.
We all seem to be feeling better
and thank you so much for your prayers.
With being ill last week and over the weekend,
we spent much of yesterday
catching up with blessing our home,
after our Bible and before our academics.

Beth and Carolynne's responsibility on Mondays
is to wipe down the walls and doorknobs.
They were very excited to do this,
accomplished it quickly and wanted more to do
so they helped by wiping down some baseboards.
Here they were in the hall together...

It was precious seeing them work together.

After our work, we all enjoyed a snack together
by finishing off the delicious chocolate chip cookies
that Ally had made over the weekend. Mmmm!

After finishing up our snack,
Ally began our Monday music lessons...

Carolynne's piano lesson

Beth's violin lesson

Will's piano lesson

Afterwards, we began our home learning time.
Will worked on his math and language
and I worked on phonics with the girls.
Here they were together at the table...

In addition to working at completing her advanced chemistry,
Ally enjoyed practicing violin...

For lunch, the younger ones were excited
to help me make biscuit pizzas
(idea courtesy of our fictional friends, the Moody's)...

We were thankful we were able to get much done

and were able to enjoy a quiet afternoon
and then an evening with friends before Daddy arrived.

We are aiming for another productive day at home,
in addition, we have a few errands to run,
a trip to the chiropractor, and piano lessons that Ally teaches.
It will be a full day and I sure am thankful
that we are able to spend it together.

I hope y'all enjoy your day, too!

we will rejoice and be glad in it."

Showers of Blessings...

Posted by HsKubes at 8:15:00 PM 22 thoughts shared
For most of the week, it has been quite rainy here.
With the rain has come 'the yucks'.
I'm not sure what we all have but it's something.
It could surely be worse
but we, also, haven't been 'up to par'.
So much so that we had to miss our midweek service
(that is always such a difficult decision to make).
We sure hope to be on the mend soon. ;o)

Though we've been a little out-of-sorts this week,
we did manage to get out of the house...
a result of the Lord wonderfully answering a prayer!
I just had to share, too.

As a sort of backdrop, let me begin
with the beginning of this past school year.
Ally was taking pre-calculus and advanced chemistry
and for those subjects she needed a scientific calculator,
which cost a little over $100
(which we just didn't have to spend on a calculator).
We prayed about it and the Lord answered
by leading us to call our local school
and asking them if we could borrow one for the year.
At first the lady said that they don't even allow
the students to take them home
but she would check with the administration.
A week later she had called back
and they said yes! So we have used it all year
and it has been such a blessing!

About a month ago, Ally and I were discussing
this upcoming school year (her 'senior' year!).
She will be taking Advanced Biology
and will need a decent microscope
(averaging in price around $200-$250+).
I told her that we needed to start praying
because the Lord sure answered our prayers
regarding the calculator and the microscope
sure costs more and we would be unable to buy one.
Well... I received an email today
from a lady in our homeschool group,
who got it from someone else, etc...
stating that our local community college
upgraded some of their items
and were selling their old ones.
Guess what one of the items were???
Yep! A microscope.
Microscopes that they used in college biology class.
The biology teached had valued them over $200
and they were selling them for $30!
We were SO tickled! The Lord had answered our prayer.
Isn't it so wonderful how He cares
about those "little things", too?!
What a blessing it is to have a Heavenly Father
that is thrilled to provide things for us like that!

Here is the microscope that He provided...

And here a few things He blessed us with, too...

a desk and chair for $5

a rolling/swivel chair for $5

I am so thankful that He allows us
to see how He answers our prayers!
We surely serve a Wonderful God.

"The LORD hath been mindful of us: he will bless us..."
~ Psalm 115:12

"...for your heavenly Father knoweth
that ye have need of all these things."
~ Matthew 6:32

Student of the Word...

Posted by HsKubes at 6:48:00 PM 15 thoughts shared

When we first began home educating, 9 years ago,
I heard of the Student of the Word curriculum.
I did not purchase it. In many ways, it scared me.
Scared me because I wasn't able to see it,
look at it, wasn't sure if I would like it, use it,
or know how to implement it, etc...
So for years the Student of the Word curriculum
and I crossed paths.
I would see it vaguely advertised somewhere,
I would read about it, contemplate over it,
and decide to set it aside for one reason or another.
This year the Lord led me otherwise.
For generations upon generations there have been
talks of wars, strife, and so forth
and we still live in those times now.
Seeing the continual downward spiral

of our society's acceptance of sin
(even in "Christian" circles),
our government's increasing 'control', etc..., etc...
In history passed, 'great' and 'powerful' countries
have met their downfall before, freedoms taken away,
Christians persecuted, Bibles burned, etc...
I once heard a pastor ask the question,
"If all of our Bibles were taken away,
how much would we (as a church) be able
to remember to make ourselves a copy."

That question has always lingered with me.

For years, in our homeschooling endeavors,
I have taught 'academic subjects' that 'throw in' Bible.
But I, so much, wanted a change.
I wanted to teach God's Word and 'throw in' academics.
I wanted God's Word to be the center of our home,
our Christian lives, and our homeschool, too.

I did some of that here and there
but I knew I needed to do more.
And more and more it tugged on my heart
of how important it is to be discipling our children
in God's Truths... saturating them in it.

Well, one day, recently,
guess what crossed my path, again???
Yep, Student of the Word.
I looked at their site, read about it, read reviews, etc...
and I prayed about it.
And the Lord led us to purchase it.
(and the 30 day guarantee helped solidify our decision, too!)

After receiving it, I plunged myself into it
to see what I had wanted to see for 9 years.
I enjoyed so much of what I read.
I loved all of the ideas

(some we were already doing!... like illustrations).
I went highlighter crazy (and I do oft' times). ;o)
At first I was a little overwhelmed, too,
wondering, "HUH?? How do I put this together?!"
It's amazing what a pen and paper can do!
So I sat down with it, got it on paper,
and figured it out, with the Lord's help.
That was 3 1/2 weeks ago.
Since then, we have consistently been using it
(though not the entire thing, yet).

What I have been sharing here on our blog
(the photos of our work, etc... in Genesis;

the art work is ours but the structure of it
is from SOW's suggestions)
the last few weeks is what we've been doing
from Student of the Word.

Some of what they share in their curriculum,
I could have come up with on my own
if I had sat down, taken the time, etc...
(I'm sure many of us could),
but it is a blessing that they have already done it,
gone through it, used it,
and have done it written down "Barney-style"
(term my beloved uses... no offense to the purple dinosaur).
... for easier use. ;o)

I will not share too much of my opinion on it
(no pros and cons, etc...)
but I did want to share more information about it,
in case others, like me, wish to know more, see more, etc...

Below are a few notes with photos.
I have, however, blotted out some of the content
but left some of it so that others could see
some of the approach and structure to their program.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SOW is a discipleship curriculum/program
that show how to use the BIBLE (God's textbook)
as the core/spine of education (and life).
(As a KJB lady, I wanted to note that this curriculum
is designed to be used with any version.
However, they do sometimes quote Scripture
and use the NKJV but it does not 'effect' your lesson,
as you do not use what they've written,
rather you are using your own Bible)
It encourages parents to DO the lessons
each night or sometime before the morning devotion.
They mention that you're able to minister
to your family, if you've been ministered to first! ;o)
They encourage you to keep your
finished assignments in a notebook/journal
and state that YOU are learning with your children. ;o)
"Since the Bible's Author is God,
when we study the Bible, we are His students or disciples."
Below is a schedule that I made up
for how we are using it in our family.
We are not using the entire curriculum
(I'm not sure if we will or not)
but below is what we have been implementing and how:
I have put this in the front of my Teacher's Edition
so that I can use it as a reference each week.
We are finishing up our fourth consecutive week
of using this and it has been a real blessing in our home.
Discipling our children it what it is all about
(other than leading them to Christ)
and this has been a helpful tool
as I "get on the ball" in consistently discipling our children.
I pray this information is helpful to others
that have always wanted to know more about SOW
or for those that have never even heard of it. ;o)
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God,
a workman that needeth not to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of truth."
2 Timothy 2:15
"Train up a child in the way he should go:
and when he is old, he will not depart from it."
~ Proverbs 22:6
"And these words, which I command thee this day,
shall be in thine heart:
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children,
and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house,
and when thou walkest by the way,
and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."
Tuesday's Tidbits...
Posted by HsKubes at 9:33:00 PM 9 thoughts shared
It was a beautiful (and wet) day today. ;o)
This morning we continued our Bible study in Genesis 4.
Today we went through the chapter
and pulled out some main events for our outline
(which the younger ones illustrate).
Here were there illustrations...
(you can click on it to view larger)
After our Bible time, Ally did music lessons
with Will and Beth...
Then we worked on blessing our home.
Ally took charge in the kitchen, which she enjoys
(and this mama is thankful for that!). ;o)
Will was assigned the dining room;
Beth the reading room; and Carolynne the living room.
Here were Beth and Carolynne
vacuuming their assigned room...
What a blessing it is when they enjoy vacuuming! ;o)
Afterwards, they sat down and enjoyed a snack.
Later in the day, we went to Ally's piano lessons,
that she teaches, and, then, had a quick visit with friends,
since we were out that way. ;o)
Then we headed home to make supper
and enjoy the evening with Daddy.
After supper, the children were sharing with Daddy
what they learned during Bible time today.
It was such a blessing to listen to them
as they recalled what they had learned.
My scary dentist appointment was cancelled today,
to which I was NOT heartbroken. ;o)
I did reschedule, though, for the end of the month.
(Thank you to those that prayed! That was a blessing!)
Now I'm off to make a menu and grocery list
and spend the rest of the evening with my beloved.
I hope you enjoy your evening, too. ;o)
"O bless our God, ye people,
and make the voice of his praise to be heard:"
~ Psalm 66:8
